As daily headlines of costly data breaches make painfully obvious, the cybersecurity talent pool is lacking: by 2021 there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs (compared to 1 million in 2017). So how are our academic institutions, certification programs, staffing organizations, and hiring companies preparing and enabling the next generation of InfoSec experts?
In ITSPmagazine’s column, The Academy, we feature stories by cutting-edge IT educators, certifying body representatives, leading industry experts, staffing agents, employers, employees, and students (this is ALL of us, by the way) who offer insights into the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity. The ultimate goal is to bring more people into the industry, even those that are underserved and/or underrepresented in the community and society.
Questions abound: What are employers looking for? How do students and active professionals stay current and relevant? Do certifications matter? How are students of varied disciplines being recruited? Why is it so crucial to have a diverse workforce in this field?
One thing is clear: the cybersecurity industry will be heavily shaped by what happens in academia and how we empower our society to join together in tackling what could be one of the biggest challenges we may face in the near future.
Thanks to contributors to The Academy, we are delivering unique perspectives in response to these questions and more, equipping InfoSec students and employees with the tools they need for satisfying careers as they meet an urgent need in our society.
